This enormous floating red dot was captured at the bottom of Melbourne's Central Business District (CBD) in a cold winter evening. It looks very unusal and it is not just a massive balloon that lits up the night of Melbourne. This large scale of public art installation at Federation Square is called Solar Equation.
Created by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, the Solar Equation is one of the major projects of The Light in Winter- Federation Square's annual celebration of light. The piece reflects a simulation of the Sun, only 100 millions times smaller than the real Sun.
When you look at the balloon and wonder how many millions of different light patterns are shown on the balloon, you are actually watching the simulation of the solar turbulence, flares and sunspots that generated by live mathematical equations.
Isn't it so cool to have a miniature Sun that shines at night in the middle of your city?
